Climbing out of Briançon the Col de Montgenèvre crosses the border into Italy. The 11KM swicthback climb is never steep and has fantastic views back over towards Briançon. Once over the border crossing you sweep down through some tunnels to the Italian town of Cesana and the base of the Col di Setstriere.

From Briançon - west - [Average gradient: 4.5% - Maximum gradient : 8.0% - Distance 11km - Height gain 500m]

The Col de Montgenèvre sits on the boarder of France and Italy. The climb starts just to the north of Briançon at 1350m and peaks out at 1850m at the ski resort in Montgenèvre. It is at this point that you pass through the border into Italy. It is a main link between France and Italy and so can sometimes be busy with traffic. The views back over to Briançon and on in to Italy are worth the climb.

The descent into Italy is fast and flowing. we usually stop in the small village of Cesana for a coffee and a bite to eat mainly because this will be your first experience of Italy. The climb that follows is the harder Colle di Sestriere.
