Bed and Breakfast Reviews

Peter 11/10/2017

Dear Helen and Phil, Staying with More than 21 bends was a very good experience. Helen and Phil made me feel at home during the whole period, preparing nice breakfasts and giving me expert tips for my long self-guided rides in the Osian valley covering all possible options beyond the 21 bends mountain upwards. For any cyclist fan, looking for excellent cost benefit solutions in the area, More than 21 bends is an excellent choice. However, please make sure you read all the instructions on how to get to the house if arriving at night… GPS alone may not get you there ! Regards, Peter

Dear Helen and Phil, Our holiday was a fantastic success. The accommodation was terrific and the location excellent. All seven of us really enjoyed the village and - of course - the cycling. We’ll definitely be coming back Best, Justin

Leigh 14/07/2017

Hi Both We had a great time. Le Bourg d’Osians is a super place and possibly the ultimate base for road cycling!! The accommodation is everything you need and we met some great, like minded cyclists. Amy′s breakfast was fantastic and she is truly is an asset to your business!!

Hi Helen Many thanks for hosting Ben and me at the back end of our half term ski trip. Excellent service and amenities at your townhouse B&B and Bourg is a great base to get to the slopes of Oz, Vaujany and Alpe D′Huez and return in the evening for a wide choice of restaurants and cafes at off the mountain prices. Hearty hot breakfast to fuel the day on the slopes and a real bonus to have the run of the place. Ben loved the wifi and English TV! Hope to visit again in the future for skiing or cycling or both! Gerry & Ben

Hey Guys Thanks again for a great time recently. That’s now the fifth time I’ve stayed with you, and you can bet I’ll be back again. Can’t wait. Cheers! Paul

Hi Helen, We really enjoyed our stay with you. The accommodation was great and we were looked after well during our stay. Breakfast was perfect on the day of our ride and the organisation around the collection and return of bikes from Prompt again was excellent. The bikes themselves were perfect and certainly improved my performance to get up Alp D’huez ;) I would like to thank Gayle again as she couldn’t have been more helpful. All in all I would recommend both More than 21 Bends and Prompt for making our trip hassle free and very enjoyable. Both myself and Paul will definitely book again next time we are in the region. Thanks again for all your help from booking the holiday right through to checking out. We couldn’t have asked for a better service. ?

James 22/10/2016

My wife and I loved the stay. I just wish it was longer. Next time I think we will stay a week since you are so close to all the best climbs. Thank you again and the birthday card was loved.

Larry 17/10/2016

Excellent place. Helen makes a wonderful breakfast. Phil, who runs the bike shop (Prompt) is very kind. We arrived and it was pouring rain. Phil kindly allowed me to have the bike the next morning when it cleared up so I could get the climb up Alpe d′heuz done. He also opened the shop during his free time to take the return without complaint. So kind.. We hope to be back.

Phil & Pete 16/10/2016

It was a really great stay and both myself and Pete would like to thank you for your extremely welcoming and enjoyable short stay at Bourg D′Oisans. We really loved the area and the B&B was perfectly placed for our ascent of Alpe D′Huez. We′d love to return in the future for a longer time to take in all the amazing routes available at your doorstep. Thanks once again for all your help and kindness, Kind regards, Phil and Pete

We had a terrific stay and cycling experience with MT21B and Prompt. Our accommodations were spacious, clean and very comfortable. The location was ideal in the heart of Bourg d′Oisans, and surrounded by mountain views. We didn′t use the laundry but it was terrific to know it was available. The secure storage for bikes and bike gear was excellent. Breakfast was lovely and promptly served each am. There was a nice choice of breads, cereal, eggs and porridge most days. One day porridge was not offered. Just a slight whine - when eggs were served it was in quantities fit for 2 people, not the 5 people at the breakfast table during our stay. We each got about a spoonful. It was great to have bananas and other fruit available for the start of a ride. Amy and Gail were lovely and accommodating. Joe was my ride leader and helped me set up my Prompt rental bike. He was terrific and did a great jog getting me set with the bike fit and guiding me on my ride up Alp d′Huez and the Col de Sarenne. His calm steady demeanor was perfect for setting the tone for a ride that was completely unknown to me with the exception of watching professional cyclists racing it. The ride was spectacular, very doable and I would not have been comfortable doing it without a guide - especially the descents. Joe also directed me to the Col du Ornon for a starter ride the day before the Alp d′Huez ride. It was terrific and had spectacular views. It was an ideal solo route - I felt comfortable riding it alone. The Prompt rental bike was really terrific, I was impressed. It fit as comfortably as my bike at home - I ride 5-6 days a week and road race, so I spend a lot of time on my bike. The disc brakes were ideal for the descents and the gearing on the Prompt bike was perfect for the challenging climbs. It was a quality bike - extra light and handled well. With a few quick fit adjustments which took about 10 minutes total - including test riding, I was off riding and enjoying every moment. It would not have been worth the hassle of bringing my bike from the states with the outstanding Prompt rental readily available.

Helen and Phil, Enjoyed our stay at Mt21B! Very comfortable and pleasant company! You both made us feel welcome and at ease during our stay and the best part? You made a great cup of coffee to start the day! I would definitely recommend you to anyone planning a similar trip...and, of course, would be eager to return. Best, David.

Andrew 17/03/2016

Very comfortable and Helen′s breakfast just what was needed for a day in the saddle. Secure storage for the bike (hired from the shop) and handy set of tools. I used the track pump, but there′s a load more.

I Just thought I would drop you a quick email on behalf of our group, This was the first time that we had ridden in this area and was very surprised how easily accessible the cycling routes were, not to mention somewhat challenging. More Than 21 bends accommodation was a perfect location for our stay especially for the climbs that we had come over specifically to ride that weekend, would defiantly like to come back for a longer stay at some point and ride out further afield taking in some more of the classic climbs like Col de Croix de Fer and Col du Galibier. The accommodation had a really friendly feel to it and was more than enough for what we wanted for this type of break, not to many frills but clean, tidy, warm and comfortable with opportunities to mix with the other guests during breakfast (Which I have to say was very nice Helen) and share experiences of their rides and plans for the coming day. The coffee machine in the living room was a nice touch too!!

We stayed at More Than 21 Bends for a week in late September. Amazing location - really couldn′t be much better. A couple of minutes from the restaurants/bars on Bourg d′Oisans, a short ride to the bottom of Alpe d′Huez, and within easy reach of some amazing cycling territory. The room was pretty basic, but it was a good size, clean, and the beds were comfortable. The biggest frustration was a lack of washing facilities - we did a decent job of washing kit in the shower, but in an ideal world it′d be good to have something more than that, even if it was just a slightly bigger basin. The breakfasts were excellent - good choice, and enough to fuel us for a day′s riding. The best part of it, though, was Helen. She was really friendly, and full of good advice on local rides. A couple of times we ran through our planned ride with her, and she suggested a few changes that made for a much, much better route than our original plan. We′d definitely come back - already thinking about a trip next summer.

Hi I′d like to say that the location is ideal for tackling the local routes: just a couple minutes walk to the village centre and literally 5 mins ride from the start of Alpe d′Huez. Parking is free, and easier than it sounds on your directions ! Very pleasant accommodation , Helen providing the ideal cycling breakfast & local patisseries supplying a few more calories for lunchtime if required . Just a bit of trivia - the tap in our room (3) was very loose & the shelf above it unfortunately slopes downwards and in any case makes it hard to use the sink. Really enjoyed our stay - I may now be inspired to tackle another classic route ;-) Regards Will

Neil 29/07/2015

Dear Helen and Phil, We really enjoyed our stay at 21 bends. The accommodation was very nice and suited our needs. Craig was an excellent host, when we arrived he gave us a guided tour of the town and was always on hand had we any queries. I cannot suggest any improvements, you have got it right. We hope to return one day in the future. Kind Regards Neil

Marit & Fredrik 26/07/2015

We really enjoyed our 2 nights at Helen and Phil′s in the cosy village of L′ bourg d′oisans at the foot of Alpe d′huez. We had great company and got good tips for great rides in the surrounding mountains. As well as we got to experience the tour the France on the alpe d′huez! We will for sure come back! Kind regards, Marit & Fredrik

Jeremy 22/07/2015

Dear Helen I really enjoyed my 24 hours with you at 21 Bends last week (much better than the Belledonne campsite at Allemont for the remaining 4 days!); the room was clean and comfortable, breakfast was lovely, and the route advice for the ride off Alpe d’Huez was spot on. Jeremy

Nick 17/07/2015

Hi Helen Just a quick note to say thanks for all your help and lovely accommodation this week. The bikes were great house fab and Craig was really helpful. Cu again next year Nick

Jon 02/07/2015

Hi Helen and Phil. Wanted to say thanks for a very enjoyable stay. Excellent location, we were made to feel very welcome upon arrival. Breakfast set us up each day with good coffee and eggs. Excellent advice on different potential routes to take, it is a stunning area with superb riding options. Hot showers and clean rooms made it much easier to relax at the end of a long ride. Would happily recommend to others. Regards. Jon

John 26/06/2015

Helen and Phil Once again we had a fabulous time with you. Great accommodation, good cycling breakfast and a lovely day being escorted up the Galibier with Phil. You couldn′t have been more hospitable. We felt like we were part of the family for the three days we were there. We will be back. Thank you again John

We had a brilliant stay with Helen and Phil at the MT21Bends B&B in Bourg d′Oisans. We arrived on a Thursday evening (lift from Lyon with the excellent chairlift.eu - Will was our driver). There were 8 of us in our party and we filled the B&B - all experienced road cyclists but most were experiencing the Alps for the first time and our goals on the short journey were to climb Alpe D′Huez and to attempt Le Col de la Croix de Fer/Col du Glandon. On the Thursday evening we arrived around 6pm, quickly built bikes and got out and up the first half of the Alpe as a bit of a sighter - 30km around the valley and the low slopes. We ate at La Romanche in the town - plenty good food and great for a large group that just wanted fuel for the next day and decent service. We ended up eating there every night we were in Bourg. It was a cheap, easy and plenty tasty option for us. Breakfasts at the B&B were perfect. Selection of mueslis, granola, toast, yoghurts, fresh fruit, juices and fresh coffee and Helen kindly cooked scrambled eggs and/or porridge to our slightly erratic orders. There′s also a little chit operated shop in the breakfast bar for things like lights, gas canisters, electrolyte tabs and most importantly (and recommended) SLABS of fruitcake. We climbed Alpe D′Huez with Phil as a guide and he did a great job of warming us up with a tour of the valley and then up the Alpe (remember if you want the official TdF Strava segment you need to start further back than you think!). Phil took pictures too which were shared with us for free later in the day. We met at Prompt.cc in town for a glass of wine in the evening too, which was a lovely touch. In the afternoon a group of us climbed up to the Pas de la Confession (A quiet climb with some stunning cliff top roads and a lovely view of the hairpins of Huez) and then back down the Alpe′s hairpins from Huez Village. 80km ^ 2,800m. On our second full day we set out early after breakfast for the Col de la Croix de Fer. We were really lucky with the May weather, but it was still absolutely freezing at the top of the Cols (Glandon was officially shut although we climbed up to it anyway after the Iron cross). The climb and the descent were everything we′d hoped for and when we got back to the B&B we were very grateful for Helen′s friend Katie and her healing hands with a little sports massage to ease the pain - we′d forgotten to book in advance, but we′re lucky she was home and free. €10 for each 10 minutes was nothing at that point! 90km ^ 2,100m. On the last morning we opted not to ride, but rather finish packing to have a walk around the village and enjoy the last bit of sunshine before our transfer back to Lyon. The strict 10am check out meant we didn′t want to risk a really rushed packing, but if you got up very early you could probably get a couple of hours in. The beds at the B&B were very comfortable, the showers were really powerful and scorching hot if required, the wi-if worked, the food was very good, the welcome excellent, the provision for cyclists was second to none (brilliant garage secure space with a stand, tools and racks for bikes and bike boxes). Really thoroughly recommended - if you can find space, I′m not surprised to hear they′re nearly fully booked for the summer. Thanks Helen and Phil.
