Tour Andalucía Spain details

  • Discover the secret training grounds of 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans
  • Andalucía including the lower valleys of the Alpujarras and the Sierra Nevada National Park in southern Spain is a dream for bike touring. As we ride you will see pretty whitewashed villages, steep valleys and snow capped mountains, this is postcard rustic Spain hopefully with the weather to boot.
  • Ride to the base of Europe's southern most ski resort of Sierra Nevada at 2600m and the Pico de Veleta - the equivalent height of our very own Col du Galibier - a 20 kilometre climb from our base in Monachil with a fantastic descent.
  • Cycle to the sea and the town of Almuñécar approximately 90 km away
  • 7 days centre based cycling holiday based in the small mountain village of Monachil in the heart of Andalucía Spain and just 30 minutes cycle ride from the beautiful regional city of Granada.
  • Great cols on super smooth quite roads frequently visited by the Tour of Andalucía and the Vuelta España
  • Cheap flights to Malaga with Easy Jet and Ryan Air and others. Once you reach Malaga we can then pick you up from the airport for £70GBP per person. You can hire a car (starting from 50 Euros for the week) from www.doyouspain.com  . There is also a cheap bus service from Malaga airport to Granada bus station. We can then pick you up from Granada bus station for free.
  • We need a minimum of 5 people booked on this holiday for it to run.

Itinerary

  • Saturday - Arrive in Monachil after 3PM. Buffet dinner in the house tonight
  • Sunday - We will be heading out of Monachil today into the outskirts of Granada before heading back out and up towards La Peza. This is an out and back ride over 80KM with a gentle climb up to the Puerto de Los Blancares col at 1297 m above sea level. The climb starts at 800m and takes 20km so is never steep. Once at the top we descend the other side to La Peza over 10km and return the same way as we have come - 80 KM
  • Monday - Your legs should be warmed up from the first day. This is the big one - the distance is fairly short today but the climb is high and starts within 100 metres of leaving the front door. We will be taking the quiet switchback climb up the Pico de Veleta from Monachil passing the Sierra Nevada Ski resort and climbing as high as the snow will allow us. The road summit is 3300m higher than anything in the French Alps ! Dinner is provided in the house tonight
  • Tuesday - Today we are going to tackle the steep ascent up towards the ski resort via the mountain town of Guejar Sierra. We will be riding deep into the valley next to the lake before hitting the climb for the day. Its steep ! Even the bends have had grooves cut into them to allow you to get traction ! The climb starts in earnest at 1000 m and rises to 1643m over the next 7 km.
  • Wednesday - Day off / free day
  • Thursday - Ride to the Spanish coast today and staying in Almuñécar in a hotel for the night. This 90 km ride takes us from Monachil at 800m on the Ruta Turistica road to a peak of 1500m before a fast technical twisty descent down to the beach resort of Almuñécar at sea level. After about 20km the true climb starts and there is a real feeling of remoteness as you gradually climb. At the high point we hit a narrow twisty road that hugs the mountains
  • Friday - We will be retracing our steps today back to Monachil. The climb out of Almunecar is long and fairly steep but the views are fantastic.
  • Saturday - Depart Monachil by 10AM
